The optical property of gold nanoparticles in PVA aqueous solution was observed by UV–visible absorption spectra. The structure transformation was characterized from PVA to PVA/Au composite by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). As would be expected from theoretical considerations the waves were found to be propagating in a plane perpendicular to the undisturbed local magnetic field. The present experiment reveals the presence of such waves propagating in directions which diverge significantly (approx 6°) from the preferred plane. It is suggested that the existence of a large horizontal sheet current could account for the observations by distorting the magnetic field more or less uniformly over a large volume of the ionosphere.
